Safe, Environmentally Friendly Ship Recycling in Bangladesh

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the government of Bangladesh launched a new project called ‘Safe and environmentally sound ship recycling in Bangladesh’ in Dhaka on April 8.

This is a key milestone on the road to improve environmental standards and improve safety within the industry. It is the result of collaborative efforts between Bangladesh, IMO, the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.

In addition to this project, there is a workshop running alongside the launch that was organized to provide stakeholders with updates on the project’s implementation and also to ensure that all parties are familiar with the objectives, deliverables and approach to this project.

Since the Bangladesh ship recycling industry has an annual gross tonnage capacity of more than 8.8 million, it’s one of the world’s most important ship recycling projects.
